Selective Wavelength Sunscreen
Solar D® Sunscreens filter harmful rays while permitting the passage of a small spectrum of sunlight that stimulates natural production of vitamin D in our skin.
Vitamin D Is Critical To Life
Humans get 90% of their vitamin D from the sun. Maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D in our bodies is important for good health.
World's First Vitamin D Friendly Sunscreen
Solar D® is the world’s first vitamin D friendly sunscreen. It uses advanced technology to permit vitamin D production while providing SPF 15, SPF 30 and SPF 50 broad-spectrum sun protection.

(The information about Solar D® Sunscreens is intended for North American audiences only.)
Did you know that ingredients in your everyday sunscreen can prevent most of the passage of light our skin uses to make vitamin D?
Did you also know that studies show that 1 in 3 people are now vitamin D deficient?
Our indoor lifestyle also adds to the problem. Working in buildings or driving a car, wearing long clothing, and cloud cover can all filter this vitamin D forming light.
According to a recent article in the Harvard Medical Schools Health Publication “Sunscreens are a dilemma, because they block UVB light (that your body uses to produce vitamin D).”
Adding to this, about 0.5% of the light our skin uses to make vitamin D reaches the surface of the Earth. Thus the dilemma. The amount of time we spend in the sun, we typically use sunscreens to filter the potentially damaging UV rays. Yet, a small spectrum of these rays stimulate natural production of vitamin D in our skin.
Solar D™ sunscreen technology is designed to let in more of the UVB rays that your body uses to naturally produce vitamin D while also screening out the harmful UV rays.
Solar D® is silky smooth to apply, is quickly absorbed into the skin and leaves no greasy residue on skin.
SOLAR D® SUNSCREEN SCIENCE
Solar D® Sunscreen Science
The formulation of Solar D® products is done selectively to produce sunscreens that permit the passage of some of the sunlight our skin uses naturally to produce vitamin D, while filtering as many of the unwanted, harmful, UV rays as possible.
All Solar D® sunscreen products have passed testing that they are SPF 15, SPF 30 or SPF 50 and “Broad Spectrum”, all have exceptionally good critical wavelength (CW) values, and some are proven water resistant. Sunscreens were applied to plates and light was shinned through them. A detector at the other end recorded what percentage of light was permitted to pass (i.e. was transmitted) for various wavelengths of light.
The objective in formulation Solar D® sunscreens was to permit the passage (marked in the graphs below as “Pass”) of some of the wavelengths in the vitamin D forming range, about 290 to 310 nm while effectively filtering (“Filter”) the unwanted, harmful wavelengths, about 315 to 380 nm.
What was found was that there are four major groups of sunscreens, categorized as follows:
A.) Sunscreen products which permit the passage of some of the sunlight our skin uses to produce vitamin D, and effectively filter unwanted, harmful UV rays (see “Pass, Filter”), Solar D® sunscreens are in this category, (dashed orange lines in figure below),
B.) Sunscreen products which effectively filter the sunlight our skin uses to produce vitamin D, and more or less effectively filter unwanted harmful UV rays (see “Filter, Filter”),
C.) Sunscreen products which permit the passage of some of the sunlight our skin uses to produce vitamin D, but do not effectively filter unwanted, harmful UV rays (see “Pass, Pass”), and
D.) Sunscreen products which effectively filter the sunlight our skin uses to produce vitamin D, and do not effectively filter unwanted, harmful UV rays (see “Filter, Pass”).
The “Pass, Filter” is Solar D SPF 30 Spray (dashed orange line).
